Set within the Staffordshire countryside, Bishton Hall is a Grade II* listed Georgian country house whose principal fabric dates from the mid-18th century. Its distinctive ivy-clad façade and classical architecture reflect generations of change.
The story of Bishton stretches far beyond its Georgian walls, with connections to prominent local families, education, philanthropy and the evolving life of an English country estate.
Today, the Hall remains the architectural heart of Bishton Hall & Gardens – a remarkable historic setting with a continuing place in Staffordshire life.

Charlotte
Sparrow.
Born in 1786, Charlotte Sparrow became one of the defining figures in Bishton Hall’s history. The daughter of John Sparrow, she spent her life closely connected to the family estate.
Charlotte never married and remained devoted to Bishton, helping preserve the estate’s connection with the Sparrow family through a period of great social change.
Her legacy reached well beyond the Hall. In 1827, she established a school at Colwich, reflecting her commitment to education and the community.
The Bishton Story
From medieval Staffordshire to the Georgian era and beyond, every generation has left its mark.
Bishton appears in the Domesday record, associated with the lands of King Harold.
The principal Georgian house dates from around the middle of the 18th century, incorporating elements of an older building.
The Sparrow family acquires Bishton, beginning an important new chapter in the estate’s history.
Josiah Wedgwood describes Bishton as an “earthly paradise”, capturing the appeal of its countryside setting.
Charlotte Sparrow establishes a school at Colwich, creating an enduring educational legacy.
Major Charles Wood becomes associated with the Hall, beginning another period in its changing ownership.
The Stafford Northcote family acquires Bishton Hall, which becomes home to St Bede’s Preparatory School.
Hansons Auctioneers acquires Bishton Hall, beginning a new chapter for the historic estate.

The passing years have changed Bishton Hall, yet its character and distinctive architectural presence remain unmistakable.

With its elegant proportions, classical detailing and distinctive ivy-clad stonework, Bishton Hall is a striking example of Georgian country-house architecture.
Behind its historic façade are spaces shaped by generations of residents, including the Hall’s impressive ballroom.
Although the house is not currently open for general public tours, its exterior remains an unforgettable part of the Bishton estate’s character.
